James had been watching Hazel paddle to her first gate when someone in line behind him nudged him. “You’re up man.”

“Oh, um, do you wanna go ahead of me?” James asked. He’d been hoping to watch Hazel’s run but the guy behind him didn’t look too eager to take his place.

“Nah, I’m good.”

James grumbled under his breath, but stepped into the water, grabbing his paddle as he prepared to get in his kayak. He didn’t waste any time getting settled in the cockpit. If he couldn’t watch Hazel’s run, he could at least catch up with her so they could celebrate at the finish line together. Then maybe he’d be able to sneak a kiss in before he had to return to his group for the rest of the afternoon.

He hated that they’d been put on opposite teams their last full day together. After this morning, James was getting far too used to having Hazel at arm’s reach. His chest tightened when he thought about having to spend a week hiking the mountains without her. And longer after that . . .

He wouldn’t let himself think about the distance that would separate them after camp ended. He was convinced something would work out. It had to, because already he couldn’t imagine his life without Hazel in it.
